This nourishing pasta with homemade Bolognese sauce is a wholesome, family-friendly meal designed to support both adults and growing toddlers. Minced beef provides a rich source of highly bioavailable iron and zinc—essential nutrients that support brain development, immune function, and healthy energy levels, especially during early childhood. Wholemeal pasta adds complex carbohydrates and dietary fibre, helping with sustained energy release and digestive health.
Tomato paste offers concentrated antioxidants such as lycopene, which has been widely studied for its role in protecting cells from oxidative stress. Garlic and onion naturally contain beneficial compounds that may support immune health, while turmeric adds curcumin, known for its anti-inflammatory properties and overall wellness support.
This recipe is also especially helpful for teething toddlers. When the spiral pasta is cooked well, it becomes soft and gentle on sore gums, making it easier and more comfortable to eat. The spiral shape is ideal for little hands to pick up and self-feed, which is why I often choose this type—it encourages independence while keeping mealtimes simple and enjoyable.

Ingredients
- 500 g wholemeal spiral pasta
- 500 g minced beef
- 1 medium onion, finely chopped
- 3 cloves garlic, minced
- 4 tablespoons tomato paste
- ½ teaspoon turmeric
- Pepper, to taste
- 1–2 tablespoons olive oil (optional, for cooking)
Instructions
- Sauté the onion and garlic
In a large pan, heat olive oil over medium heat. Add the chopped onion and cook for 3–4 minutes until softened. Add garlic and cook for another minute until fragrant. - Cook the minced beef
Add minced beef to the pan. Break it apart with a spoon and cook until fully cooked through. Cover with a lid briefly to help it cook evenly. - Add spices and tomato paste
Stir in turmeric, pepper, and tomato paste. Mix well so the beef is fully coated. Let it simmer for a few minutes until the mixture becomes thick and rich. - Cook the pasta
Bring a large pot of water to the boil. Add pasta and cook according to package instructions until tender. Drain and set aside. - Layer and combine
In a separate pot, layer cooked pasta and sauce gradually until all is used. Add about ¼ cup of boiling water, cover with a lid, and cook on low heat for 15–20 minutes to allow flavours to combine. - Final mix and serve
Gently mix everything together. Serve warm. Add grated cheese if desired.
